Twitter celebrates it’s 5th birthday this week and announces it’s growing at a record pace
It may have taken over 3 years to reach 1 billion tweets but it now averages 1 billion Tweets a week. In the last month, Twitter signed up an average of 460,000 accounts per day. It is clearly now a serious social media player.
In an attempt to monetise it’s success, in the US, Twitter are trialling ‘promoted tweets’ similar to Google’s AdWords. These Tweets appear at the top of the page in a box labelled ‘Ads by Twitter’.
Clearly, Twitter has captured a share of people’s attention and made significant progress over the past 5 years. The challenge for Twitter is how to monetise the service without compromising the user experience and importantly their attitudes to the brand.
